Overview:
We are presently studying the book of Philippians working our way through the entire book. We study each chapter in a "verse by verse" fashion to understand the context behind each verse and how they all tie together with each other to better understand Paul is saying. We examine how the passages of Philippians apply to our lives as singles in our daily walk in life.
The bible study is not a typical "classroom lecture". During the bible study instruction, I seek your input and ask if there are any questions or comments. During the life applications discussion at the conclusion of the bible study, I offer opportunity to share thoughts. Finally, we close with prayer requests for each other and lift those up in prayer. Those who are not comfortable with praying out loud in public, are not pressured to pray.
As we study a specific set of verses in Philippians, we compare them with other verses in the bible that help shed more light on what is being said in a particular verse.
We examine key words from the verses in their original Greek language to gain a deeper and richer insights into the meaning of specific words in our English translations. There is an old saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words"! The Greek Language paints a beautiful picture of scriptural meanings
A MORE in depth Explanation of why we study the Greek behind English words:
There are many more words in the Greek language than there are in the English. This enables the Greek words to more thoroughly describe the precise meaning behind words in any bible verse. There are also tenses and other grammar in Greek words that have no comparable equivalent when translating them into English in our modern versions of the bible. That is one reason why different translations of the bible may employ a different word for the same verse in the bible. They are trying to convey a different aspects of a particular word. Looking at the English word in Greek gives a pictorial view of the true meaning of the word bringing passages to life in ways you may never have experienced before in Philippians!
The Bible Translation
The main bible translation I utilize in the bible study is the New International Version (NIV) but I also include references to the NASB, KJV, and AMP versions because each translation brings out an aspect of the Greek word behind each of the translations.
Prayer
We have an optional time of prayer at the conclusion of the bible study around 8 pm. You may share requests and praises to be lifted up in prayer that evening. You may join us in praying out loud or you may quietly join us in prayer. Our goal is to not pressure anyone to pray but offer the opportunity to pray.
